Joss Whedon doesn't really want to make a Star Wars film, but the right character could convince him to do it anyway.
Ever since last year's massive Avengers success, Whedon's become a major player in the realm of blockbusters. He's already crafting his Avengers sequel, Age of Ultron, and he's got a deal with Marvel that basically allows him to have a hand in all the films the company's developing. He's neck-deep in superheroes, and if he keeps churning out successful comic book movies, he'll likely have his pick of any franchise he'd like to play with when his time at Marvel is done. He could, for instance, try his hand at an X-Men movie, perhaps, or mosy over to DC and finally make a Wonder Woman film. He could even stay in the Disney family and take a shot at something in the Star Wars universe.
Whedon's definitely aware that such opportunities exist, but he doesn't seem too keen to pursue them at the moment. In a new interview, he explained why he's not so sure he wants more franchise filmmaking on his plate after his Avengers stint is up.
"There’s probably a dozen [properties I'd like to play with]. It’s very important I don’t do that. It’s very important that we start creating new content again," Whedon said. "We can only build on nostalgia so much before we have nothing left to build on. Before we’re rebooting Spider-Man—again. It’s dangerous to the culture, and it’s boring to me. I squeezed in between my Avengers movies a 400-year-old play. So I really need to create some new worlds."Then, the interviewer -- Entertainment Weekly's James Hibberd -- tossed out a possiblity.
"So if Disney said, 'Here’s the Boba Fett movie,' you’d say no?"What if Disney really did ask Whedon to take on a solo film centered on one of the most badass characters in the galaxy? Here's his response:
"I can’t say for sure, because that’s a tasty morsel. But right now my heart doesn’t go that way."If Whedon has his way, his Marvel years will be followed by a little new universe building, but a lot can happen between now and 2015. He doesn't want to jump on board another franchise "right now," but who could pass up the Boba Fett movie?
