While it looks like it could power your own personal Death Star, this sphere is actually a 62 channel speaker that makes a regular 7.1 channel surround rig look decidedly quaint.
Created by Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), the "death star" sphere has 62 individually driven speakers that they say will create a holographic sonic image of a singer.
No word on whether there are plans to actually put this into production, I guess someone will have to make a 62 channel receiver first.
