For years, the foot pedal has been the go-to convenience tech for trash cans. Just step on the pedal, and the lid opens — what could be easier? How about a motion sensorthat opens the lid at a wave of your hand? That would be the Sensor Can from SimpleHuman.
This "smart" can has three modes: Most of the time it's in Ready mode, where only an object moving directly over the sensor will open the can — stuff passing in front doesn't do anything, so it won't pop up when you're just passing by. Once activated, the can goes into Task mode, extending the sensor area and staying open until you've completed your, uh, refusal. Is your task taking longer than three seconds? Then the can goes into Stay-Open mode, holding the lid open for 30 seconds.
Afraid your kid might wreck the lid, or wear it out by playing with it nonstop? SimpleHuman claims the mechanism is robust enough to endure most pulls and slams, and six C batteries should make it last about a year, curious toddlers notwithstanding. Nylon discs on the can's bottom make it easy to slide around, too.
We like the promise of the Sensor Can and appreciate that it frees up our tired feet. Still, we've been in enough airport bathrooms to know that motion sensors aren't exactly the most reliable of technologies.
