\Unless you've been living in a bunker for the last two days, you've probably seen that clip of what appears to be a missile streaking into space. Now NASA and the Pentagon have concluded that it was just an optical illusion caused by the sun on the contrail of a jet headed west.
This boring conclusion will no doubt disappoint the hundreds of news outlets that ran with the story, speculating that it was anything from a submarine launched warning fromNorth Korea, to a covert spy satellite.
The helicopter pilot who shot the original video says that he followed it for 10 minutes, but even this did little to deter the missile theory, despite the fact that an actual missilewould be halfway across the Pacific in that amount of time.
