What's inside a CPU

Ever wonder what's inside that little chip that powers your computer and makes life worth living? To find out, all you need is an old Pentium III, a power saw, a scanning electron microscope and one curious PhD student's step-by-step guide on where to start.
A self-described PhD student "doing research in the field of nanotechnology" ("specifically semiconductor nanowires and their electrical properties," if you're curious) needed to know what was inside a CPU for a course he's (or she's) teaching. So, like any good scientist, he employed the experimental method and tore one apart.
If you're not willing to ruin a good CPU to find out, take a gander at our gallery below for a quick peek. Want the full tour? Check out the Sciency Stuff guide here.
