Just days ago Leftlane delivered an update on Tesla’s plan for the next few years, which included a mention of a Model X crossover that is likely to debut in 2014.
At the time, little information was available on the mystery utility vehicle, but new information leaked from inside sources speaking to Auto Observer suggests that this CUV will have exterior dimensions in-line with most small or mid-size SUV, but the interior is said to be on par with aminivan in terms of available space.
Should this revelation be true, Tesla will have not only to find a way to more efficiently package its CUV than anyone before, but it will also have the added challenge of storing a substantial amount of batteries as well. Granted, Tesla also has the advantage of removing an SUV-sized gasoline engine from the packaging, which may allow for some creative storage of the battery storage.
It is also worth noting that at this time Tesla says it is still in the design and sketching phase on this SUV, so the expected packaging advantages may or may not pan out when it comes time to actually produce the vehicle.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk did mention last week that a prototype of the Model X could debut as early as late-2011 – so they may be further along in development than they are leading on.
