NASA's Glory satellite was shot into the air this morning to begin a three-year mission to analyze how airborne particles affect Earth's climate—but that mission never got a chance to begin, its short trip ending a few minutes after lift-off when the rocket carrying it crashed into the Pacific Ocean.
The Taurus XL rocket took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, but a protective shell didn't come off the satellite as it should have about three minutes after launch, which meant the spacecraft couldn't achieve the velocity it needed to reach orbit.
