Cisco Systems Inc. has built a mobile datacenter inside a cargo container.
The San Jose company (NASDAQ: CSCO) envisions the datacenter, which can easily be hauled around on the back of a truck or by ship or train, as useful for governments for disaster response. The center can be deployed “in as few as 12 weeks” from the moment it is needed, Cisco said. That period includes testing and shipping the center and getting it working at the site, which can be outdoors (it’s weatherproof) or indoors.
Cisco also said the containerized center could be helpful in bringing IT support to remote areas.
This modular datacenter uses an open platform that customers can integrate quickly into their own systems, Cisco said -- an advantage over other systems based on proprietary technology.
