Comparison of 63 video cards: tests and benchmarks

The site Guru3D has posted an enormous performance comparison of 63 AMD (ATI) and NVidia video cards. This should assist people in the purchasing of a new video card, providing good information relative to a consumer’s budget and activities.
63 video cards and GPU combinations (SLI and CrossFire) have been analysed by Guru3D, making this today’s document of reference for video cards.

It should be noted that the indicated performances are with a margin of error of 5% due to the evolution of drivers, and therefore performance. A video card tested 4 months ago could have been slower than the same one tested today with updated ATI or NVidia drivers.

All of the cards were tested on the same PC and operating system, with the only variable being the video drivers used.
Motherboard:
2010 eVGA X58 Classified
2011 MSI x58 Big Bang XPOWER

Processor:
Core i7 965 @ 3750 MHz

Memory:
6144 MB (3x 2048 MB) DDR3 Corsair @ 1500 MHz

1200 Watt Power supply

Moniteur : Dell 3007WFP - up to 2560x1600 resolution

OS : Windows 7 RTM 64-bit

To analyse the performance of each card, the following tests were conducted running both DirectX 10 and 11:
  • Far Cry 2
  • Call of Duty  Modern Warfare 2
  • Battlefield Bad Company 2
  • Anno 1404
  • Metro 2033
  • Colin McRae DiRT
  • Crysis Warhead
  • 3DMark Vantage
  • 3DMark 11

The standard resolution used for the test was 1920x1200 pixels.

Note: for the video games, the results are indicated in FPS (frames per second). The higher the FPS count, the more fluid the game plays. As a general rule, we can consider that:
  • <30 FPS :  the gameplay will be very limited
  • between 30 and 40 FPS : the game is very playable
  • between 40 and 60 FPS : good gameplay, no problems
  • >60 FPS : the game is a fluid a possible

3DMark 11 is a DirectX 11 application, which explains the limited choice of tested video cards, but this is nevertheless a very good indicator of recent video card performance.
