Warner Bros. Announces Gotham City Impostors

We can't help but think of the catcher's-gear-wearing Batman copycats in Tim Nolan's The Dark Knight Returns. Here's why: Warner Bros. announced today it is developing Gotham City Impostors, a downloadable first-person shooter that lets players pose as amateur versions of Batman or the Joker.

Gotham City Impostors turns Batman's home turf upside down, letting players run wild with their own customizable vigilante or villain in an over-the-top multiplayer FPS. F.E.A.R. 2 studio Monolith is developing the game for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

"Gotham City Impostors blows apart expectations for superhero games with an exaggerated take on first-person shooters, set in a part of the DC Universe players have never seen before," Warner Bros. Interactive's development boss Samantha Ryan said in a statement.

"Unprecedented" customization options for costumes, gadgets, and weapons will be available, and maps and modes based on the DC Comics Batman universe are now in the making.

No release date or pricing were announced. It's unclear at this point how Gotham City Impostors is related to Rocksteady's Arkham Asylum follow-up, Batman: Arkham City. That game is set to ship for PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows PCs on October 18.
