Samsung and Google dropped a huge bomb on Android fans last night. While the Galaxy Nexus stole the show with its huge 720p screen, Android 4.0 picked up the leftovers. Arguably, the coolest feature using a person's face to unlock a smartphone.
Using face detection for security is anything but new. Companies that specialize in security have worked on the technology for years. We've seen action flicks use the tech all the time. At last, face unlock comes to the masses.
With Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a person simply has to look into the front facing camera and the smartphone does the rest. If a face matches, it'll unlock, if it doesn't, well tough cookies.
It remains to be seen just how secure Google's face unlock really is. Will high-resolution photos work too? What about a person wearing a really well-made 3D face replica mask? If fake ways to bypass the face scan can trick the camera easily, that's not going to sit well with many people. In that case, a regular old number password is probably still safer.
The feature certainly sounds exciting and promising, but we'll have to really take the face lock out for a spin before making any final conclusions. LINK
