There were a few things that were strange about Garland (Texas) Christian School's victory against Lakehill (Texas) Prep on Friday night. It wasn't just that the final score was more customary for a basketball shootout, it was also how the teams got there.
Eventually, Garland Christian emerged as the 94-66 victor in a shootout for the ages. The teams combined for an astounding 19 rushing touchdowns in the game, with Garland Christian quarterback Hayden Burnett, pictured above, leading the way with 330 total yards and five total touchdowns.
As documented by the Dallas Morning News, Lakehill was led by running back Chris McCarty, who ran for 255 yards and five touchdowns. One of his teammates, Milan Rabah, actually outgunned him (rushing for 277 yards) but finished with one fewer touchdown.
The box score for this game is practically a must-see right here. It's practically the length of a Dunder Mifflin balance sheet, with more touchdowns in the third quarter alone (eight) than many games see in their entirety.
Of course, the most notable factor in the game was that both teams racked up incredible points. This wasn't your Grandpa's run-of-the-mill high school blowout, where one team scores nearly 100 points and its opponent scratches out a single touchdown (if that). No, this was a sandlot-style shootout by two legitimate 11-man football teams.
Both squads had multiple wins -- the victory improved Garland Christian to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in TAPPS 2-IV district play, setting up a district title decider on Friday -- and neither was a mere also-ran (Lakehill is 3-6) in what has to be one of the more compelling offensive football games across the country this season.
And, as if the teams' statistical soup needed any more spice, there's this: Despite all the points flying around, Burnett actually didn't live up to his own immense statistical averages in the victory. The Morning News' Mark Dent reported that Burnett actually entered the contest averaging a preposterous 450 total yards per game, meaning that Lakehill held him a full 120 yards below his customary level of offensive production.
Of course, that might be the only thing the Lakehill defense could claim to have held after giving up 94 points, but given Burnett's rapidly expanding profile, that's still a minor accomplishment for the team's defenders to hang their hat on. LINK
