Fantasy roleplayers arrested for forcing daughter to duel

What would be a reasonable punishment for a 16-year-old girl who snuck out to a party without telling her mom and stepdad? Grounded for a month? Extra chores? Whatever you think is reasonable, it's not what happened to the stepdaughter of Freamon Seay.
According to MSNBC, first, Seay punched his stepdaughter, then beat her with a tree branch. What happened next is in some ways worse.

Seay forced the girl to strap on a helmet and padding and fight him with a wooden sword for two hours, until she collapsed from exhaustion.
First, a little background: in groups such as the Society for Creative Anachronism(SCA), medieval fighting is a practiced skill, and potential fighters must first beauthorized by an experienced official of the group. Many SCAdians enjoy teaching their children to fight, as it's a cardiovascular, weight-bearing exercise and can be a great deal of fun. And 16 is considered old enough to fight with a parent's permission.
However, forcing a teen to strap on armor and swing a sword for two hours after she's been beaten is cruel—not to mention unusual—punishment.
Sadly, Seay has just given the world another (and in this case, good) reason to think of historical recreationists as militant nutters. LINK
