The mysteries of the China and Japan continue to fascinate those of us raised on English and corn flakes, but one Canadian recently took his own technological innovation eastward to create something uniquely Asian and quite useful.
The Water Calligraphy Device was created by Nicholas Hanna to automate the old Beijing tradition of water painting Chinese calligraphy on the ground. The mechanism essentially "prints" a dot matrix pattern of Chinese quotes controlled by a handlebar-mounted laptop that are pushed out to a rear array of solenoid valves as the tricyclemoves forward. The mobile Chinese character printer was revealed as part of the recentBeijing Design Week. You can see the device in action in the video below.
