At an awards ceremony in New York last night, James Cameron dropped several hints about Avatar 2 and how Sigourney Weaver could be in the movie—even though her character died in the first film.
Weaver herself has suggested a few times since the release of Avatar that her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, could return in the sequel even though she seemingly died of a bullet wound before her consciousness could be permanently transferred to her Na'vi body. But how could that be?
Leave it to Big Jim. The man received a Breakthrough Award from Popular Mechanics on Monday night, with Weaver on hand to give him his trophy. After the ceremony, Vulturecaught up with Cameron and asked about Weaver appearing in the Avatar sequel. His first response, "Did I say she was going to be in Avatar 2?", was said with a grin, but then he got into it:
Have you ever heard of nonlinear storytelling? A lot happens on that planet before she shows up, and before Jake shows up to join her. She's there for fifteen years ahead of time. I don't know, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions.So does this mean that Avatar 2 could feature flashbacks? Cameron wasn't going to reveal that much, but he did add this:
