Though he's had an acclaimed career that includes a number of challenging roles, Robert Downey Jr. knows being cast as Tony Stark changed his life forever. But even he's willing to admit that while Iron Man was a great superhero film, Iron Man 2 was, well ... not.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times reflecting back on many of the major films of his career (including Tropic Thunder and Sherlock Holmes), Downey talks about how he views the Iron Man films now, and why the first one worked better than the sequel:
"The first one changed everything for me and with the second Iron Man there were certain aspects that were dissatisfying and disappointing to me but at least they lit me right. ... [The first one] was a meditation on responsibility and an exploration of how a small group of people can take a two-dimensional idea and, if the winds are right, create something that makes people say, 'That was my favorite movie of the year.'"He also takes time to talk about the work involved in bringing an iconic character like Iron Man to life. For him, playing Tony Stark was more than playing a comic book archetype, and preparation was key.
"To me, Tony Stark's story is a karma story and a technology story. I love a good action movie—a Steve McQueen or Tom Cruise or Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis or Mel Gibson in the right spot, and you smile and say, 'That's what this kind of movie is all about.' There were two times in my life I prepared for something manically, it was [Iron Man] and Chaplin. I became the expert on this guy."Downey is working on his third flick as Stark—The Avengers—right now, and we're all probably thinking the same thing: Hopefully, no one will find that film dissatisfying.
