We've known for some time that a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man was in the works before the first movie opened. But now we have official evidence that there is even more Spider-Man on the way.
The Amazing Spider-Man opened in theaters at midnight last night (or this morning, depending on how you look at it), and the movie's official Facebook page commemorated the event with this post:
"The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero's journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents."
It's a no-brainer that Columbia Pictures will want to make a lot of movies about our wallcrawling hero if The Amazing Spider-Man is a hit (and judging from last night's $7.5 million box-office haul, it probably will be one). In fact, the studio has so much confidence in its reboot that it's already scheduled Amazing Spider-Man 2, or whatever it will be called, for May 4, 2014.
But this is the first official word that there will be a third film and that all three will form one complete storyline. If you've seen the new film (spoiler warning), you know that Peter Parker's (Andrew Garfield) missing mom and dad are a major yet unresolved part of the story. You also know that there are hints about one of Spidey's biggest villains scattered throughout the movie as well.
The first three Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies also formed a loose trilogy, but a second trio of films starring the same character is unprecedented. Of course, The Amazing Spider-Man could crash and burn this weekend and put even a second film on ice. But if not, do you want to see at least two more Spider-Man films? And should all three tell one large-scale story?
