So you think that the team that brought us the Dark Knight trilogy is going its separate ways now that the saga has ended? Think again.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Wally Pfister, the cinematographer who has shot every film by director Christopher Nolan since 2000's Memento—including all three of Nolan's Batman films—will make his directorial debut with an original new science fiction movie called Transcendence.
For his first time out as a director, Pfister will have a solid support system behind him: Nolan and his wife/producer, Emma Thomas, are going to act as executive producers onTranscendence and help Pfister steer the project to completion. And while it's true that Johnny Depp is in talks for the lead role, Pfister apparently is interested in getting Christian Bale on board for one of the other two main roles in the film.
So ... you've got the Nolans overseeing, Pfister behind the camera, and Bale possibly in a starring role. That's a huge chunk of the ingredients that make Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises (along with the underseen and underrated The Prestige) such epic successes.
As for the plot of Transcendence, Pfister is taking a cue from his former boss and keeping things pretty close, although the movie is said to be along the lines of films like 2001 and Inception, and deals with "a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness."
