At CES 2013 last week, Innergie announced a chubby little portable battery pack that can charge your phone or tablet on the go. It's a crowded space of gadgets to be in, so why should you use Innergie's gear as opposed to something else? It's a good question, but fortunately, Innergie has some good answers.
An easy way to figure out if a CES gadget is worth covering is to ask someone at the booth to explain to you in 30 seconds or less why their thing is the best thing at the show, but somewhat uniquely, Innergie was actually able to give us a convincing answer as to why its new battery pack, the PocketCell Duo, is the one to get:
- It's small. It easily fits in a pocket, and is light enough that you can mostly forget about it.
- It has high capacity. 6800 mAh is a lot for something this size. The iPhone 5 has a 1400 mAh battery, to give you a sense of how much that is.
- It's good for at least 4,000 charge/discharge cycles, or 3 years of use.
- You can plug two things into it at once.
- It charges fast. Both of the USB ports will charge at 2.1 amps, which is unique to the PocketCell.
- It includes protection for short circuit, over temperature, over current, over power, and over voltage, so it won't fry your stuff.
- Its cable helps it charge even faster, since shorter cables are significantly more efficient. Innergie says that it's cable will charge up to twice as fast as Apple's USB connector, simply because of the length.
- The cable works for mini USB, micro USB, and Apple stuff. Lightning connector is due out in March.
Innergie is pretty confident that you won't find this mixture of power, capacity, size and features in anything else, and we have to admit, the form factor is handy, and the cable is quite clever especially if you have multiple devices that you need to charge. Expect to pay just under $100 the PocketCell Duo; it's available now.
Innergie's also working in a new USB wall charger that promises faster charging of your devices by pumping 2.1 amps through dual 5v USB sockets, for a total of 21 watts, which is a lot of power for such a small little brick. Again, this is not something that you'll find in similar products, many of which only charge at one amp (half as fast). Also, it's apparently smart enough to figure out just how much power it can safely pump into whatever device you plug into it thanks to a "smart chip," which should help keep your device's batteries from getting thrashed. Look for the Duo USB wall adapter to show up in March for $30.
