Sony's water-resistant Xperia Tablet Z is thinner than iPad mini

The former top dog of electronics is poised to make a huge comeback this year. Sony's new Xperia Tablet Z is everything its Xperia Tablet S should have been: super thin, super light and beverage-proof, with pretty respectable specs, too.

The Xperia Tablet Z is (or will be) the world's thinnest 10-inch tablet at 6.9mm thick and is the world's lightest tablet at 495 grams, making it thinner and lighter than Apple's 7.9-inch iPad mini. But just because the Xperia Tablet Z is thin and light, doesn't mean it skimps on hardware: the tablet runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and has a 10.1-inch touchscreen with a killer 1920 x 1200 resolution, 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, 6,000 mAh battery, 8.1-megapixel rear cam and 2.2-megapixel front cam. The Xperia Tablet Z also has a full suite of ports and connectivity including 4G LTE, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and a microSD card slot.
The unique magazine "curl" design hallmark on the Xperia Tablet S and original Tablet S is gone and won't be missed. In its place is a slick all-glass front and rear chassis that can be submerged in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The Xperia Tablet Z is also dustproof.
Sony will be selling the Xperia Tablet Z in black and white, but it hasn't yet announced any specific details on pricing or availability. With Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Spain coming up next month, everything should clear up.
