If rumors are true, we may soon be seeing Sherlock in a galaxy far, far away.
Film Chronicles (a solid enough source that doesn't deal in speculation, according to Bleeding Cool) is reporting that Cumberbatch, of Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Hobbit fame, has been cast in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII.
Below is their headline:
Benedict Cumberbatch is in Star Wars VII
Well, that’s as straightforward as you can get.
Now, this is hot on the heels of The Hollywood Reporter’s story that Cumberbatch had dropped out of director Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peakjust last week.
Thing is, BOTH Crimson Peak and Star Wars: Episode VII are scheduled to start production at the same time. Elementary, then, my dear Watson?
Still, there’s no official source confirming this casting. According to Film Chronicles, however, Lucasfilm is about to make a huge casting announcement, which would allegedly be that they’ve nabbed Cumberbatch, who's a really smokin' hot property right now and also happens to be a big Star Wars (make it Han Solo) fan. Lucasfilm may be using the U.K. release of Star Trek Into Darkness on DVD and Blu-ray—out now, and out next week in the U.S.—as momentum for the casting announcement.
Unclear, too, is the role that Cumberbatch would play. There are apparently a few Skywalker and Solo offspring to be cast, all of them 20-somethings, so Cumberbatch would be a tad too old at 37 to play either one of them.
So if, indeed Cumberbatch has been cast (still a rumor, you guys), will he once more be filling the shoes of a major villain (which he did brilliantly in Star Trek Into Darkness)? Or will he play one of the good guys, such as a valiant Jedi knight who perhaps was a former apprentice of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)?
Some fingers seem to point to him playing a Sith, and that his character would appear in all three films of the new trilogy...meaning Cumberbatch would have to clear a bit more from his schedule.
Hopefully, we’ll find out soon.
What do you guys think? Do you want to see Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Wars: episode VII?
