James McAvoy may not have been everyone's first choice to play a young Charles Xavier in Matthew Vaughn's upcoming X-Men: First Class, but there's no doubt that he has the talent to pull it off. But if you were expecting him to channel Patrick Stewart in the role, you're going to be disappointed—because that's the last thing the actor plans to do.
McAvoy made it clear in an interview with MTV that his performance won't repeat that of the classically trained Stewart—at least not just yet.
"I'm basically going to try and bury Patrick's performance," the actor joked. He then went on to explain that he wanted to put his own spin on the character before he becomes the Professor X we've all grown to know and love in the previous three X-Men movies.
"I think the fun about these films, when you go back and you either reboot or do a prequel, is you get to see how people became who they are. That means that you have to do them differently, and by the end of the movie you have to do them the same way. The interesting journey is what happens to them, what changes them, what makes them evolve—not just mutate, but emotionally and psychologically evolve. ... I would suggest by the end of the movie and the start of the next movie, it'll be more like what Patrick does. Or maybe not. Maybe it will still be in a period of flux, if there is a new movie."
Sir Patrick "Captain Jean-Luc Picard" Stewart is a truly fantastic actor, and James McAvoy has enormous shoes to fill, but it'll definitely be interesting to see what he'll do with the character and to see exactly how Charles Xavier became Professor X. It's also funny to note that McAvoy said that he wanted to go bald for the role but the producers wanted him to have hair—at least for the time being. (Thank you, producers. The idea of McAvoy being bald is actually somewhat unappealing.)
