Apple iOS Ahead Of Android in Enterprise Activations

From June to September a new mobile device activation report from the Good Technology showed that Apple's iPhone and iPad and Smartphone based on Google's Android operating system are being approved by consumers to help with their enterprise work.
The mobile messaging and device management software maker said that devices based on Apple's iOS have accounted for Apple iOS devices representing 56 percent of net new activations from June 2010 through September 2010.

The Android based Smartphone accounted for 28 percent of net new activations over that period, while Windows Mobile devices represented 15 percent of net new activations over that period. Owing to the strong Apple iOS adoption, the company's iPhone 4 has led all device activations among Good's enterprise customers, which span some 4,000 accounts. The study included devices, which were only launched in the United States in late June.

The iPhone 3GS has ranked second on Good's short list despite being more than a year old. Apple's iPad, which is believed to have sold 10 million units since its launch in April secured the 3rd position. At the No. 4 is the Android-based Motorola Droid X, launched on Verizon Wireless in July.

RIM is still easily the U.S. Smartphone market leader with some 37-40 percent of market share. However, RIM, whose BlackBerry devices have been the corporate mobile mainstays for about a decade, is slowly losing share to the iPhone and Android. The network companies are increasingly letting its users choose their mobile handsets for enterprise use. This has opened the door for Smartphone platforms such as iPhone and Android.

Worth mentioning is that Windows Phone 7 will be launched on Oct. 11, which will provide new grist for Good's next mobile device activation report. Windows Mobile devices are sure to have a position due to the continued use by government and other enterprises.
