It looks like the rebooted Spider-Man franchise has found actors to play Peter Parker's beloved Uncle Ben and Aunt May.
According to Heatvision, Martin Sheen is in final negotiations to play Uncle Ben, while Sally Field is in talks to play Aunt May.
In Spidey mythology, Uncle Ben and Aunt May raise young Peter after the death of his parents, but it's Uncle Ben's murder at the hands of a burglar—a crime Peter could have prevented—that puts Peter on the path to use his spider-powers for the good of society and not for personal gain. The frail yet feisty Aunt May remains his one true family member, whom he is often called upon to protect.
Uncle Ben was played briefly by Cliff Robertson in the earlier Spider-Man movies directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, while Rosemary Harris did a terrific job in the role of Aunt May.
Sheen is known for roles in movies like Badlands, Apocalypse Now and Wall Street, while Field started on TV as The Flying Nun and graduated to acclaimed films like Norma Rae and Forrest Gump.
They'll join a cast that already includes Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as the villain, presumed to be Curt Connors/The Lizard.
The new Spider-Man, which begins shooting next month, will be directed by Marc Webb ([500] Days of Summer) from a script by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac).
