Even though the first iPad-only newspaper has been delayed, rumors are already circling about an entire digital magazine storefront for Apple’s tablet.
The project features Next Issue Media, a joint venture of five media companies set to distribute magazines across tablet devices. As reported byMashable, Apple is almost ready to announce a magazine subscription model for the iPad with titles from Conde Nast and Hearst, among others, to be prepared in time for a summer launch.
Other tablets and e-book readers (i.e. Nook Color) already offer subscriptions to magazines from multiple publishers. There are already a few magazines (i.e. Wired, Glamour, GQ) available by single-issue purchase on the iPad, and other monthly glossies make an appearance via dumbed-down mobile apps.
Apparently a big hurdle is getting publishers to actually ink a deal as Apple is known to be a bit over-controlling. However, this really does seem like the future of digital publishing, and we all know that the print industry can use all the help it can get.
