Mayor eyes bigger venue for Dinagyang 2012

ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is eyeing a bigger venue for the major events of Dinagyang next year.
Mabilog said he is proposing to invite President Benigno Aquino III to come and be the guest of honor in Dinagyang Festival 2012, with the main event Ati-atihan Competition to be held at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

The sports complex can accommodate more than 20,000 persons in a given activity, while the four performance areas during the competition can only accommodate less than 10,000.
Mabilog said that with the presence of Aquino, the sports complex may swell of spectators and supporters of the President.
The Dinagyang 2011 main events will have Presidential sister Ballsy Aquino Cruz as guest of honor.
This year, some 1.2 million spectators are expected to witness the major events, particularly the Kasadyahan Competition on Saturday, January 22, and the Ati-atihan Competition on Sunday, January 23.
Mabilog said several government and diplomatic dignitaries will come and attend the week-long festivities.
Movie stars and entertainers from Metro Manila were trying to outdo each other in seeking approval from Ilonggo viewers.
This week also saw the first Iloilo film festival sponsored by the Film Development Council of the Philippines and independent film producers with 11 indie films that were shown abroad. (LCP)
