Seeing as we're not cats, we humans need night vision cameras to spy on people in the dark. The thing is, the cameras can only record images in green. A new night vision camera can capture real-time video in the dark — in color.
Developed by the Nanosystem Research Division (NRD) of AIST, the color night vision camera sees red, blue and green objects using "various algorithms that analyze the wavelengths reflected when objects are illuminated with infrared, and the the characteristics of the objects."
According to NRD, color night vision cameras would revolutionize security cameras and wildlife observation. No doubt, it would. We're all for crispier pics of thieves robbing bodegas and learning about nocturnal animals or the habits of animals after sundown.
NRD is hoping to have the cameras ready for a commercial release by the end of this year. In the meantime, it's working on support for different lenses and on reducing the production costs of the camera. While NRD is making tweaks, it should make the cams HD as well. 1080p color night vision would be sweet.
