Who would have ever thought a Today Show producer would be tasked with writing a remake of an '80s classic about nuclear war? MGM has set Noah Oppenheim to script its planned reload of the 1980s Cold War flick WarGames. Oppenheim is a former producer on NBC's flagship morning show whose Jackie O script generated heat in Hollywood, and now it's up to him to reboot JOSHUA.
Oppenheim is a Harvard graduate and, prior to The Today Show, he co-created CNBC'sMad Money w/ Jim Cramer and served as executive producer of Scarborough Countryand senior producer of Hardball with Chris Matthews. During his time with NBC News, Oppenheim led coverage of presidential elections, 9/11, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the 2006 Torino Olympics.
With all that news experience, Oppenheim could create a modern WarGames story that fits into the current global landscape. The original 1983 thriller starred a pre-Ferris Bueller's Day Off Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy in a tale of a kid who thinks he's playing a computer game but nearly starts World War III.
In addition to Oppenheim, Seth Gordon, who directed this year's Horrible Bosses comedy, has been attached to direct the film. MGM has been setting up a lot of remakes lately, with Carrie, Robocop and the soon-to-be-released Red Dawn in the works.
