The End of 'Khloe and Lamar'

Sitting down? Good. Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom's reality show is kaput.
The news comes from several industry sources, including Us Weekly and TMZ. Apparently, Khloe and Lamar are no longer interested in filming their show after two seasons on E!.
According to a source that spoke to TMZ, Odom wants to refocus on his hoops career. Indeed, his game could use some attention. The onetime Los Angeles Laker had a disastrous season after his trade to the Dallas Mavericks. Odom postedcareer-low numbers, averaging 6.6 points per game and just 4.2 rebounds. He is currently on the team's inactive list.

Gabourey Sidibe Reveals the Terrible Advice She Got From Joan Cusack [Video]

A young actress getting to meet one of her big-screen idols? Great! That same idol utterly crushing the young actress's hopes and dreams? Not so great.
That's pretty much exactly what happened to "The Big C" star Gabourey Sidibe when she met one of her heroes, quirky actress Joan Cusack. On last night's "Watch What Happens Live," host Andy Cohen asked Sidibe which celebrity she was most disappointed by when she met them, and she told the story of how she ran into Cusack at a industry party -- and Cusack told her she should quit show business because "it's so image-conscious."

Exoskeleton hand gives you robo-powered fingers - Festo.com

Festo's prototype robo-hand can operate machine manipulators from afar, and could help stroke victims regain use of their hands.

In the future when we'll all be wearing robotic exoskeletons, we'll laugh when we think back on the days when we were mere meatsacks. German automation firm Festo is helping us upgrade with the ExoHand, a glove controller that can give people a machine handshake.
Known for its elegantly engineered SmartBird robot seagull, Festo says its ExoHand can not only teleoperate a robot hand in a master-slave control relationship, it can reduce strain from repetitive tasks when using your own old-fashioned, flesh-and-blood hands.

Raspberry Pi Gets an Electronics Prototyping Plate Kit

Things are beginning to stir over at the Raspberry Pi camp, with the initial batches of orders beginning to flow and the supply line unclogged, units will soon be making their way into the hands of ordinary PC enthusiasts. When that happens, there will be a demand for more and better capabilities for projects. One of the first such offerings will be from Adafruit’s Prototyping Plate kit.

US tiger shrimp sightings worry scientists

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A big increase in reports of Asian tiger shrimp along the U.S. Southeast coast and in the Gulf of Mexico has federal biologists worried the species is encroaching on native species' territory.
The black-and-white-striped shrimp can grow 13 inches long and weigh a quarter-pound, compared to eight inches and a bit over an ounce for domestic white, brown and pink shrimp. Scientists fear the tigers will bring disease and competition for native shrimp.
Shrimp are all bottom feeders, eating detritus and small animals. Bigger shrimp would eat more and these get so big they also eat small shrimp and fish, marine ecologist James A. Morris said.
Reports of tiger shrimp in U.S. waters rose from a few dozen a year — 21 in 2008, 47 in 2009 and 32 in 2010 — to 331 last year, from North Carolina to Texas.

Avengers pre-sales numbers smash all other Marvel movies combined

We knew The Avengers was destined to be the biggest Marvel movie to date, but now we're starting to see just how big it's set up to be. Advance ticket sales for the flick are piling up fast, so fast that eight days before its U. S. debut, The Avengers has already sold more pre-sale tickets than all the other Marvel movies ... combined.

Original Star Wars storyboards show a much creepier Emperor

Thanks to an interview with Star Wars: Return of the Jedi storyboard artist David Russell, some old school design art from the film has been released in the wild. What stands out the most? The Emperor was, apparently, even creepier during the design phase.
Russell's artwork is pretty great, and it shows some of the scene concepts worked out while the film was being pieced together. The Emperor shots stand out quite a bit from the finished product and actually come off as even more menacing than the final version.

Why you'll never see the Thrones cameo George R.R. Martin filmed

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has been lucky enough to stay extremely close to the HBO series based on his epic fantasy saga. He writes one episode per season and serves as an executive producer. Martin even had a cameo in the show all lined up, but even though it was filmed, you'll never see it.
In a recent web chat, Martin fielded fan questions on everything from his writing process to his favorite sandwich, and he also addressed the possibility of a cameo in the hit HBO series. Turns out it already happened way, way back in the days of the Game of Thrones pilot, but thanks to a casting change, Martin's appearance never made it to broadcast.

New video of Saturn and Jupiter stirs the imagination

New video of Saturn and Jupiter stirs the imaginationIn my opinion this is one of the coolest space videos I've seen in a long time. The video shows images of Saturn and Jupiter captured by NASA's Voyager and Cassini spacecraft in spectacular detail. We see Saturn's rings come alive and the cosmic storms swirl on both Saturn and Jupiter.

Got smartphone? (And if no, why the heck not?)

All of you reading this who own a smartphone, raise your hand. Hmm, yeah, that's what I thought — DVICE readers are heeled, as they used to say in the old west.
You who didn't raise your hands, you stupid phone owners — no, I mean the phones are stupid, not you — after all, if there are smart phones, there must be stupid phones, right? Okay — how about smart-challenged phones.
In all events, those of you with not-smart-phones are now an endangered minority. According to Pew Research, 53 percent of Americans say they now own a smartphone.

Watch MIT's robot arm weave webs like a spider

Watch MIT's robot arm weave webs like a spider
The folks at MIT's Media Lab are teaching a robotic arm to spin material into webs, just like a spider would. Why? It's either so robot armies could easily cocoon captured humans a few years from now, or maybe so robots could spin flexible structures that could be attached to existing buildings. Why would we want that? Keep reading.

Meth Smugglers Tried to Sell Secret Drone Parts to China

It began as a conspiracy by two international drug traffickers to smuggle meth into New Jersey, but ended as a plot to steal U.S. military drone technology on behalf of the Chinese. At least, that’s the rather fantastic claim made by the Justice Department in an oddball caper that seems to borrow equally from Burn After Reading and Breaking Bad.

Army’s ‘Magic Bullet’ Will Hang Out in Midair, But Won’t Kill You

This is the recipe for peak absurdity in weapons design. One part bazooka round; one part suicidal drone; one part stun round. What the U.S. Army hopes will emerge from that mix is a warhead that can loiter in midair while it hunts a human target — but won’t kill him when it finds him.
That “Nonlethal Warhead for Miniature Organic Precision Munitions” is on the Army’s wish list for small business. And for good measure, its outline for the weapon relies on a different system, one that’s just barely getting off the ground. “This effort will require innovative research and advancements in non-lethal technologies which can be packaged within a very small volume and weight,” the Army concedes.

The iPad-maker's shares, which had seen selling pressure over the previous 11 trading days, soared some 8.9% on Wednesday.

Overall, the technology sector performed the best on the day, followed by basic materials stocks. Indeed, the Nasdaq had its best day of the year.

How to Make Perfect McDonald’s-style French Fries at Home

Even food snobs who shun McDonald's have to admit that they serve the mother of all French fries. Ray Kroc, one of the chain's founders wrote in his autobiography that the fry was "almost sacrosanct for me. Its preparation a ritual to be followed religiously." The end result is a crispy golden-brown baton showered with just the right amount of salt. The exterior's initial crunch yields to a tender and steaming white center. More, please?
"They are consistent," says David Myers, chef/owner of Comme Ca in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. "I can't imagine how many millions of dollars in research and development they have spent in order to achieve a perfect fry around the world." Myers is no stranger to fried potatoes. His restaurants, which serve classic French brasserie fare, cook hundreds of orders of "pommes frites" (French-fried potatoes) a week.

5 small cars with the worst gas mileage

Small cars are the bread and butter for car manufacturers in almost every market except the United States because they’re compact, fuel-efficient, easy to maneuver in congested cities, and typically more economical than larger models. While small cars are not as popular in the U.S. as they are in other countries, the segment as a whole has been on the rise in the U.S. due to soaring gas prices. If you’re a looking to buy a small car to achieve better fuel economy and save money at the pump, don’t just assume all small cars will feature similar fuel economy; sports-tuned models with turbocharged high-horsepower engines and manual transmissions tend to have much lower fuel economy than their non-sporty counterparts. In fact, as you will see, the difference in fuel economy between trim levels of the same model can vary greatly.

Americans pick Toyotas as highest-quality cars: The Yahoo Autos Survey

Toyota tops quality survey
Three years after a blitz of recalls and quality crises, Toyota has regained its image among Americans as the automaker with the highest quality vehicles, topping all others in the first Yahoo! Autos Survey. The four brands right behind it include a couple of names you might expect -- and a couple of surprises.
Of the 1,000 people asked which automotive brand built the highest-quality vehicles, Toyota came on top with 13%, well ahead of any other brand. That figure's in line with its performance on the industry's traditional independent quality trackers — the annual Consumer Reports and J.D. Power surveys. Both found a downturn in the wake of the sudden acceleration recalls in 2010 and federal probe that eventually exonerated Toyota, but the automaker regained ground after vowing to focus on better quality vehicles. Toyota took five of the top 10 picks from Consumer Reports this year.

(AP) — Brittany Killgore was hoping to unwind for three days after filing for divorce from her Marine husband serving in Afghanistan.
Prosecutors believe things quickly went wrong when she met another Marine for a night out.
"She sent a text saying, 'Help,'" Patrick Espinoza, a deputy district attorney in San Diego County, said Thursday. "She was missing from that point on."
Authorities said Killgore's body was found in brush near Lake Skinner on April 17, hours after paramedics were called to a San Diego motel and found another woman with self-inflicted cuts and a suicide note.
Killgore's message to an unidentified friend was disclosed at an arraignment for Louis Ray Perez, 45, who pleaded not guilty to murder.

Apple is "ten years behind Microsoft" on security says security firm Kaspersky

Macs are about to be swamped by a new wave of malware attacks, and are at risk because Apple is "ten years behind Microsoft" when it comes to security, says Eugene Kaspersky, founder and CEO of the security firm Kaspersky. If he's right, the recent Flashback Trojan attack is the shape of things to come.
In an interview with Computer Business Review, Kaspersky said that Apple needs to alter its security approach if it's going to fend off the wave of attacks. He said:
"I think they (Apple) are ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security. For many years I've been saying that from a security point of view there is no big difference between Mac and Windows."

Apple literally does rule the world

Apple's growing presence in China over the past year is further proof that the U.S. is not the most important market to fcous on.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- If you are waiting for the Apple "bubble" to pop, you might be doing so for a very long time. Apple defied the skeptics Tuesday, blowing away earnings and sales forecasts.
Shares of Apple surged 9% Wednesday and are now back to within about 5% of their all-time high. I think the biggest mistake the Apple (AAPL,Fortune 500) bears made was being too eager to jump on "disappointing" iPhone activation numbers from Verizon (VZFortune 500) and AT&T (TFortune 500). iCynics assumed that meant Apple would not be able to hit analysts' forecasts of 30 million iPhone sales for the quarter.

The market was dead wrong on Apple

The market was dead wrong on AppleAAPL -0.97% and that provides a big opportunity to make money and a level playing field for the small investor. Apple opened today at 616, up 56, and is undervalued. Its products are ubiquitous and widely understood and appreciated by the public. Even Warren Buffett could understand this technology company.
With the latest earnings taking the professionals completely by surprise, the small investor has the same advantage of knowledge as the professional. The small investor, at least for today, knows as much about Apple news as anybody on the Street.
All the analysts are busy re-working their numbers on the company, so using their currently published numbers is really being conservative. When I wrote an article back in October on APPL, the recent analyst 12-month targets were 550, and the high analyst target was 700.

Apple CEO Tim Cook emerges from Steve Jobs' shadow

NEW YORK – Apple CEO Tim Cook has long seen as the humorless and unemotional guy running the show from behind the scenes. But he is beginning to reveal a more assertive and eloquent side, hinting that he's learning to shoulder more of Steve Jobs' role as a front man and leader.

On a conference call with journalists and financial analysts late Tuesday, Cook showed some fire when talking about competitors, echoing the combative Jobs. He also spouted a vivid metaphor that spread like wildfire over Twitter before the call was over.

Exclusive: Senior U.S. General Orders Top-to-Bottom Review of Military’s Islam Training

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Tuesday ordered the entire U.S. military to scour its training material to ensure it doesn’t contain anti-Islamic content, Danger Room has learned. The order came after the Pentagon suspended a course for senior officers that was found to contain derogatory material about Islam.
The extraordinary order by General Martin Dempsey, the highest-ranking military officer in the U.S. armed forces, was prompted by content in a course titled “Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism” that was presented as an elective at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. The course instructed captains, commanders, lieutenant colonels and colonels from across all four armed services that “Islam had already declared war on the West,” said Lt. Gen. George Flynn, Dempsey’s deputy for training and education.

Donald Trump demands Scotland nix wind turbines

(AP Photo/Andrew Cowan/Scottish Parliament)EDINBURGH, Scotland  Donald Trump has demanded in Parliament that Scotland end plans for an offshore wind farm he fears will spoil the view at his exclusive new golf resort.
In a typically blunt display, the New York property tycoon Wednesday told an inquiry into renewable energy to stop the wind power efforts.
He says, "Scotland, if you pursue this policy of these monstrous turbines, Scotland will go broke."
