Researchers have discovered a new brain stem cell, which could have great implications for the future of medicine. The stem cells can form various types of cells, including new brain cells, which could possibly be the key to healing many brain injuries.
The stem cell, discovered by researchers at Lund University in Sweden, could open new paths to regenerating damaged or dead brain tissue.
"A similar cell type has been identified in several other organs where it can promote regeneration of muscle, bone, cartilage and adipose tissue," said Jay Van Andel Endowed Chair in Parkinson's Research at Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) and Head of the Neuronal Survival Unit at Lund University Dr. Patrik Brundin.
Since these other stem cells can be used to help repair damaged organs in varying degrees, such as growing an entire new trachea, scientists hope the newly discovered brain cell could have the same properties when applied to those who have suffered brain injuries, including strokes.

"Ultimately the goal is to strengthen these mechanisms and develop new treatments that can repair the diseased brain," said associate Professor of Neuroscience at Lund University and the study's primary author Gesine Paul-Visse.
