Have you always wanted to build or program your own robot, but didn't know where to start? Well, you’re in luck, because if the Linkbot Kickstarter project is successful, you'll soon have access to a functional robot that works out of the box that you can build upon and expand as you gain more knowledge about how it works.
Linkbot is unique in that it has an unlimited capacity for expansion. It comes equipped with three mounting surfaces where you can attach additional modules or accessories. It also will allow you to snap on a variety of additional structural parts. Want to add wheels, a gripper and a camera mount? No problem! The bolt pattern attached to the mounting surfaces will allow you to attach almost anything you can think of, and if you’re into 3D printing, you will be able to download models of Linkbot accessories and print them for yourself.
Linkbot was originally created to foster learning. The robot grows as your own skills and knowledge grow. The goal of the Linkbot project is to create something that anyone can use to unleash their own creativity regardless of their technical expertise. Its creators also believe that Linkbot can be used as a powerful educational tool to inspire kids to get interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).
Each Linkbot includes absolute wheel encoders, an accelerometer, a rechargeable lithium ion battery, and ZigBee wireless technology. Also, the standard Linkbot is hoping to ship with a variety of built-in features. BumpConnect will allow Linkbots to connect to each other wirelessly. TiltDrive will convert one Linkbot into a remote control in order to control other Linkbot modules by tilting it forward, back, left and right. CopyCat lets one Linkbot be controlled by rotating the hubs of another Linkbot. Finally, PoseTeach (probably the coolest feature) makes it possible to program complex motions directly into the robot with your hands instead of by using a keyboard.
