Visit an Acura dealer to check out the automaker's redesigned 2014 MDX when it hits the market in July and you might be surprised that the price of entry has been lowered to $42,290 compared to the outgoing model's $43,280 list price.
That represents a $990 decrease from the outgoing model once the mandatory $895 destination charge is included.
But there's a catch. While the new Acura MDX boasts a more efficient engine and a number of other major feature and design updates, it's now available with front-wheel-drive. Previously, all MDXs sent power to all four wheels, but Acura thinks that the front-wheel-drive model will appeal to buyers primarily in sunbelt states.
Opt for all-wheel-drive and it'll set you back $2,000 more. As a result, a similarly-optioned MDX is actually $1,010 more for 2014.
Both drive configurations will offer a pair of optional packages. Pricing below is for front-wheel-drive models without the mandatory $895 destination charge. Add $2,000 to the price for all-wheel-drive.
- At $46,565, the Technology package ups the MDX's wheels from 18 to 19-inch alloy units, adds forward collision warning, lane departure warning, rain sensing windshield wipers and a full color TFT display screen.
- At $48,565, the Technology and Entertainment package adds an ELS audio system, heated seats for the second row and a 9-inch DVD entertainment screen.
- At $54,505, the range-topping Advance and Entertainment package includes a higher-end audio system and a 16.2-inch screen in place of the 9-inch unit. It also includes automatic braking if it detects an impending incident, a lane departure mitigation system designed to nudge the MDX back into its lane if it begins to drift and added luxuries like fancier leather trim, auto-dimming side mirrors, power lumbar for the passenger's seat, air conditioned seats up front and a remote starting system.
The increased price puts the MDX above the Buick Enclave and Infiniti JX35 but below the BMW X5 and Audi Q7.
