Despite the fact that sci-fi fans are going nuts for Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, the flick is apparently tracking badly with the masses. So is the mechs-vs.-monsters epic doomed to go the way of John Carter?
Del Toro doesn’t think so, and actually addressed a thread on “bad buzz” on his studio forum. According to Del Toro, all that negative press is starting to turn around, and the film still has a great chance to be a hit.
Here’s what he told fans in the middle of a debate about the film’s box-office chances:
“We just need to keep working. Our numbers are going up. Not in a minor way. SIgnificant. We are one the right track. Whatever sequel opens will have, by definition, higher awareness and numbers across the board but we are moving strongly in the right direction.”
It’s not much of a surprise that Del Toro is rallying the troops, and for the sake of original sci-fi films, we hope he’s right that things are starting to rebound. Pacific Rim is a big-budget gamble, and if it flops, it could make studios even more skittish to take a shot on movies like this.
So do you think Pacific Rim will be a hit? LINK
