Google's Street View team won't stop until they map every square inch of the planet, after which it's not entirely unlikely that they'll set their sights on outer space. In the meantime, here on Earth, yet another obscure, hard to reach location has been mapped by the Street View team in Japan.
Battleship Island (aka Gunkanjima aka Hashima Island), the deserted city lair of James Bond villain Silva in Skyfall will no longer be a mystery to the world thanks to the Street View team's Trekker backpack device. The mapping expedition took roughly two hours to complete using the 42-pound Trekker backpack which contains a 15-camera array that records images every 2.5 seconds, giving the wearer a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding terrain.
Now, for the first time, anyone will be able to virtually visit the haunted ruins of Japan's deserted island city from the comfort of their home. In an unrelated development, Google has also justannounced the launch of a program that will allow third-party organizations to borrow the Trekker backpack to add new mapping data to Google Maps.
