Desktops and Notebooks: Dell, Following HP, Intros Intel-Based Mobile, Rack Workstations

Dell introduced two new mobile workstations April 26, the 15.6-inch M4600 and the 17.3-inch M6600. Designed for applications manipulating massive amounts of data, Dell officials call them "the world's most powerful 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch mobile workstations with 2nd-generation Intel Core i7 processor Extreme edition and 1600MHz system memory options."
The same day, Dell also introduced a Precision R5500 rack workstation with Intel Xeon processors and memory capacity up to 192GB with dual-wide GPU slots that scale up to 450 watts. Other options include GPU solutions, such as the Nvidia Quadro and Nvidia Tesla. Remote workers have the option of accessing the R500—should it be located on an oil rig, say, or at a distant mine—via PCoIP (PC over IP) technology from Teradici, which compresses and transfers only the rendered graphics pixel data over the network, which is designed to create a user experience akin to working directly beside the machine. All three new units will arrive in May.
