Windowfarms lets apartment dwellers flex their green thumbs

Just because you live somewhere without a yard doesn't mean you can't have fresh herbs and colorful plants in your home. Windowfarms combines principles of hydroponics with vertical gardening to let green thumbs indulge their favorite pastime using a little bit of space near their windows.

First developed by New Yorker Britta Riley with help from Rebecca Bray, the original system involved repurposed plastic bottles and martini cups which funneled nutrient-rich liquid to 25 plants strung on wire. The idea grew and was improved upon, and has since gone through many modifications.
Now the project is entering a new phase in its development and gathering funding through Kickstarter. The new system includes a kit using BPA-free molded plastic containers, wire, and an easy, snap-together construction system. An air pump sends liquid to the top of the tower at regular intervals, and it trickles down through the various planters to a reservoir at the bottom.
There are seven days to go in the Windowfarms Kickstarter, and pledges of $99 or more will get you your very own Windowfarms system. Throw in another $60 and they'll send you everything you need to get started, including baby plants and nutrients.
